About Junagadh



Junagadh is located in western Gujarat and is surrounded by Arabian sea and forest area. It is located at a longitude of 20.47 N to 21.45 N and a latitude of 70.15 E to 70.55. The City is a famous tourism place of Gujarat, was once the capital of the Nawabs of Junagadh. Junagadh means old fort or city of old fort. History says that ancient names of Junagadh were Karankubj, Manipur, Revant, Chandraketupur, Narendrapur, Girinagar and also known as Puratanpur. After 1820 AD British Govt. gave the name Junagadh which is registered by the State and is popular in the public. However rural people even today say refer it as Junagadh. Junagadh was ruled by various rules. Last Nawab of Junagadh Mohabatkhanji left for Karanchi on 9.11.1947 due to attack by Aarzi Hakumat established by public of Junagadh. In 1949 Junagadh State was merged with Saurashtra State. It is also known as Sorath. Junagadh is the seventh largest city in Gujarat. The city has an interesting mix of Buddhist monuments, mosques, Hindu temples, elaborate mansions and Gothic archways. The city has many eye catching monuments which reminds its great history. These monuments are there since era of rulers and are now famous attractions of tourists. Millions of tourists from across the world come to Junagadh every year. Junagadh is a place of pilgrimage and has produced a number of saints in its long history. The most famous being the Gujarati saint-poet, Narsinha Mehta. Best season to visit Junagadh is between October to April. By road: Junagadh is 327 km from Ahmedabad, 102 km from Rajkot, and 113 km from Porbandar, and is accessible by ST bus from each of these places, as well as from other cities in Gujarat by way of Veraval and Rajkot. Bus is recommended as the best way to get to Junagadh. By rail: Two express trains run on the Ahmedabad-Veraval line, one at night (with a rather inconvenient schedule) and one by day. Ahmedabad is 7.5 hours away by train. Junagadh is also on the Rajkot-Veraval line, with Rajkot 2.5 hours away, and Veraval 2 hours.
